Ny-Ålesund was once the northernmost mining place in the world. It was from here that the legendary Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen started crossing the North Pole in 1926 with the airship “Norge”. Nowadays Ny Ålesund is a centre of Polar science.
During the Polar night’s time, some 40 scientists are working in the station. At the time of the midnight sun their number raises up to 150, coming from over 18 nations.
